OGSG Warns Against Dumping Of Refuse At Illegal Dumpsites

Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji
ABEOKUTA - The Ogun state government has warned residents of Opako and those plying the Adigbe-Opako-Obada road to stop dumping refuse at an illegal dump site along the road or face sanctions.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Mr. Oladimeji Oresanya gave the warning at the weekend while clearing the dumpsite.

He said the clearance was the second time in two months as the state government is forced to take-out the waste and advised them to give their refuse to waste-managers who are going from house to -house to collect wastes instead of dumping them at the illegal dumpsite, warning that whoever is caught will be sanctioned.

Similarly, the Ogun state government has began the rehabilitation and upgrade of five dumpsites across the state.

According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment who doubles as the head of the newly established Ogun-state Waste Management Authority, (OGWAMA), Mr. Oladimeji Oresanya, the dumpsites are in Saje Abeokuta, Ikoto Ijebu-Ode, Okediya Sagamu, Akinside Ibogun and Kurata in Sango OTA.

He said the rehabilitation and upgrade is make them more motorable with the construction of earth roads with laterite surface completed with drainage channels in each of the five dumpsites.

Oresanya said this will make the dumpsite accessable during rainy and wet seasons and advised compactors drivers to move in when dumping their refuse to avoid wastes on the road as the sites are now properly organised.
