Lockdown: Why I Stole 22 Bottles Of Coke, Suspect Tells Court

ABEOKUTA - A-27-year-old man, Abiola Olaniyi on Thursday has told a magistrate court sitting in Abeokuta that, the quest for thirst led him to have stolen 22 bottles of Beverages and five bottles of Orange juice.

The prosecutor, DSP Tijani Isah told the court that, on the 10th April, 2020, the suspect stole 22 bottles of Coca Cola, one bottle of berry blast juice, and five bottles of 5Alive juice belonging to one Mrs. Iyabo Shoyombo of Ibara Housing Estate in Abeokuta. 

The prosecutor further explained that, the stolen items was valued at N4,600.

The suspect who pleaded guilty to the one count charge, said he was thirsty while coming back from road walk and saw the items in a refrigerator outside the complainant's apartment.

The defendant counsel, Chief John Olugbenga Apanishile prayed the court to temper justice with mercy by giving the accused a non-custodian sentence. 

Barr. Apanishile explained that, the accused was merely an hungry man who was looking for something to sustain him, urging the court to grant his client some other punishment that can make him a better member of the society. 

Delivering her judgement, Magistrate Ibilola Abudu ordered the refund of the value of the stolen items which the defendant's counsel undertake to pay on his behalf. 

The Magistrate also sentenced the accused to community service punishment by cutting the grass around the court premises for the rest of the day.
