ABEOKUTA - Worried by the high rate of road accident and reckless driving by road users in Ogun state, the Transition Committee Chairman of Abeokuta South local government area of Ogun state, Hon. Michael Ayodeji Shomide on Wednesday inaugurated Traffic Mayors to maintain law and regulations on the roads within the council area.
Hon. Shomide while inaugurating the 20 volunteers traffic mayors at the council secretariat at Ake, Abeokuta said the high rate of carnage on the roads was worrisome, noting that recklessness and care free attitude of some commuters and drivers have brought grief and sorrow to residents of the state.
The council boss stressed that, statistics of road crashes released on daily basis is alarming and shocking.
He further stressed that, some drivers are fond of taking alcohol and other illicit drugs before driving, while some make phone calls while driving, causing wanton destruction of lives and properties.
He explained that, as a way of his administration's resolve to instill sanity on the roads and ensure accident free society, the local government has partnered with the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) to inaugurate the Traffic Mayors.
Shomide added that the purpose was to corroborate efforts of the state government at reducing carnage on the state roads to its bearest minimum.
"We are committed to ensuring that the lives and properties of our peace loving people in the local government area are adequately protected.
"In recent times, the high rate of carnage on our roads is becoming worrisome. The recklessness and care free attitude of some commuters have brought grief and sorrow to some families, making them to lose their loved ones.
"It is therefore neccesary to address the menace to curtail further loss of lives. Many at times you see some reckless drivers driving against the traffic as a result of their impatience, thereby ramming into other unsuspected road users.
"The purpose of this cops is to corroborate the efforts of the state government at reducing the carnage on our roads to the bearest minimum. Some may view it as being a duplication of agency, it is a known fact that our law enforcement agencies are short staffed. It is therefore essential not to limit the enforcement to the existing agencies who are incapacitated to reach every nooks and crannies of the state."
Meanwhile, the TRACE Commander, Abeokuta South office, Commander Michael Ajayi said the newly recruited Traffic Mayors are expected to sensitize and educate road detain various rules and regulations.
Commander Ajayi charged them to be law abiding and desist from engaging in illegal operation.
