ABEOKUTA - The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is set to deploy 3,000 security personnel ahead of July 24 local government poll.
This was disclosed on Wednesday by the Commandant of the Corps in Ogun State, Hammed Abodunrin, during training of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGISEC)on safety ahead of the election.
The training which was held at OGISEC secretariat Oke-ilewo Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital.
Abodunrin said the essence of the training is to bring the conciousness of the workers of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commissions during the election.
He said “There’s no way we can allocate security operatives to each and everyone of them but if we also want to build their capacity to be security concious.
“We are taking them through personal security, basic things that they should be doing to enhance their own personal security so that when they are secured they will be able to conduct free and fair election. They won’t be panicking and their family will be at peace.
The NSCDC boss stressed that they will provide adequate security for the electorate, before and after the election.
He said the 3000 personnel to secure the local government election in Ogun State will be in uniform and plain cloth personnel who will work with other security agencies to ensure that the election is free, fair and safe.
“Conduct of electoral officer at times could also trigger violence if they don’t do their conduct very well and people will be thinking that they are suspecting injustice.
“We want to give them this skills on how to do things right and how to make sure that members of the public have confidence in them.
The Commandant appreciated the Chairman of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commissions (OGISEC) Osibodu for his presence through out the training of the 50 personnel who are permanent staff.
