ABEOKUTA - Police in Ogun State at the weekend engaged some dare devil armed robbers, in the early hours of Saturday in a gun battle at Ipamesan area of Sango Ota.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi in a statement said the arrest followed a distress call received by the DPO Sango Ota divisional headquarters, CSP Godwin Idehai.
Oyeyemi said, the robbers were operating at Ipamesan area, and that they had already burgled a warehouse in the area.
The PPRO explained that, on sighting the policemen, the robbers, who had snatched two vehicles from different locations, took to flight, but were hotly chased by the policemen.
He added that, on getting to Joju area, and realizing the determination of the patrol team to subdue them, the robbers engaged the policemen in gun battle.
He noted that, due to the superior firepower of the policemen, they abandoned the two robbed vehicles, a Lexus RS 330 with registration number FKJ 691 FW snatched from one Dosumu Kazeem, and a Toyota Matrix with registration number MUS 835 FW snatched from one Ibrahim Lateef, and took to their heels.
According to him, the team of policemen pursued them, and one of the robbers, later identified as Henry Obe was arrested in the process.
He stressed further that, it was later discovered, that the hoodlums have shot a guard attached to a warehouse own by one Yinka Oduwale, before broken into the said warehouse and looted it. The guard was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
Items recovered from them are: one long gun, 41 laptops, 2DVD players, 2 phones, 3 tablets gadgets, one Lexus RS 330 with registration number FKJ 691 FW and Toyota Matrix with registration number MUS 835 FW.
Meanwhile, the commissioner of police, CP Edward Awolowo Ajogun, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to state criminal investigation and intelligence department for discreet investigation.
He also directed the crack detectives, to go after the remaining members of the gang, with the view to bring them to justice within the shortest possible period.
