Food Security: Experts harp on preservation of bees

 

Experts have called for the preservation of bees as parts of efforts towards achieving food security in Nigeria.

The spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during an event organized by the Apicultural Association of Ogun State to commemorate the 2021 World Bee Day.

Prof. Olusegun Lawal of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, emphasized that bees pollinate majority of crop produce being consumed by human being, hence the need for their preservation.

Prof. Lawal, in his lecture, maintained that bees also help in ensuring that there is balanced ecosystem.

"It will interest you to know that bees act as pollinators to between 60 to 70% of the food we eat and also take care of our ecosystem. So bees are very important, he said.

He advocated for a national policy on the protection of bees warning that Nigerians may face famine if there are no enough and adequate pollination system.

The state Commissioner for Agriculture in Ogun State, Dr. Adeola Odedina, reiterated the determination of the state at ensuring food security in the state.

Represented by Mr. James Oyesola, the commissioner assured that the government will continue to come to the aid of farmers as and when due.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State Ahmed Umar, assured that the FRSC and other security agencies wild ensure seamless movement of
