ABEOKUTA - The maiden edition of Media Cup organized by Ogun State Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in partnership with Opulent Hub will kick-off on Friday, March 25, 2022.
The competition is a 5-Aside football game to be played among practicing journalists in the state.
Addressing journalists at a press conference on Tuesday, the SWAN Chairman, Hakeem Akintunde said the competition is organized to foster unity among media practitioners and various media organizations in the state.
Akintunde noted that, the competition is to further keep fit sports journalists in the state and unwind.
Alhaji Akintunde appreciated the sponsor for his continued support to the activities of the SWAN in Ogun state.
In the fixtures, the opening match is between Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation (OGBC) and Federated Chapel of Ogun NUJ will be played at the Fun Turf of MKO Abiola International stadium, Kuto Abeokuta by 10am.
The football team of Paramount FM will also battle their counterpart from Sweet FM in one of the games slated for the maiden edition of SWAN/OPULENT MEDIA CUP.
In other fixtures, Rock City FM will take on Family FM by Noon while the football team of Correspondence Chapel will slug it out against Smash FM by 2 O'clock in the afternoon.
On Saturday, Super FM, Ijebu-Ode, and Ogun State Television (OGTV) will tango for a place in the quarter-finals of the competition, Splash FM will confront Consolidated Chapel of Ogun NUJ, Roots FM will take on NTA Abeokuta, while Ogun FIBAN will battle State Information Chapel of NUJ.
In his remark, the CEO of Opulent Hub, Chief Ayodeji Daramola the sponsor of the competition said he decided to sponsor the competition as part of his company's Corporate Social Responsibility to the people.
Chief Daramola noted that the competition is to compensate for the hazards sports writers in the state are confronted with.
He assured the association of his continued support and to make the competition an annual event.
As part of his contribution, the owner, Penpushing Media, and former zonal Secretary of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Zone D, Mr. Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji commended the current leadership of SWAN in the state for promoting the association.
The former NUJ scribe, therefore, promised to support the competition with N10,000 award prize for the Most Valuable Player of the competition.
