ABEOKUTA - The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, has congratulated athletics sensation, Tobi Amusan, for winning the women’s 100m hurdles gold for Nigeria at the 2022 World Athletics Championship, Oregon, USA.
Adebutu said he was excited that despite all odds, the Ogun State-born sprinter made her country and all Nigerians proud with her latest world-record achievement.
Amusan, who hails from Odogbolu, had set a new world record in women's 100 meters hurdles at the ongoing event in Oregon, United States, becoming the first Nigerian athlete to win a World Athletics Championship gold.
The 25-year-old athlete had finished the race in 12.06sec, beating her own record in the semi finals which was 12.12sec.
While joining well-meaning citizens to celebrate the "Golden Girl," Hon. Adebutu said, in a statement issued yesterday by his Media Director, Afolabi Orekoya, that he was poised to reproducing "many more Tobi Amusans" if elected as governor.
He assured that his administration would create the enabling environment for sports development and the germination of sporting talents.
According to him, the PDP has a track record of huge investment in sports development in the state and will not hesitate to reprise such if massively voted into power again.
Adebutu, who berated the Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration for laying claim to Amusan’s victory, lamented the dearth of grassroots sports development in Ogun State under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He, however, pledged to revive and transform sports if elected as governor of the state in 2023, urging all sports lovers to support his aspiration and shun those who paid lip service to sports development.
Adebutu said, "Sports development, especially at the grassroots level in Ogun State has suffered years of neglect and poor funding in the hands of the inept administration of the All Progressives Congress.
"This government came into power with a charade of setting up a Sports Commission but the commission failed woefully alongside this administration.
"My administration will genuinely development sports, especially at the grassroots level, with adequate funding and involvement of the private sector. The PDP has a history of massive investments in sports and I assure the good people of Ogun State that our administration will not hesitate to reprise such feat if voted into office.
"Our commitment and determination is to reproduce many more Tobi Amusan in our dear Ogun State. It is doable with the right political party in power.
