Football: Abeokuta South Gears Up For "Dapo Abiodun Cup"

 


ABEOKUTA - All is set for the maiden edition of Dapo Abiodun Cup football tourney organized by Abeokuta South local government of All Progressives Congress (APC), Ogun State.


The free age football competition is organized to promote healthy rivalry among the youths and party members in the 15 wards of the two State Constituencies that made up the local government.


Addressing sports writers at a press conference on Wednesday, the Chairman of the party in the local government, Mr. Henry Fagbenro said the competition is to kick start the 2023 campaign of Governor Dapo Abiodun re-election in the local government.


Fagbenro maintained that, the competition will be played strictly by APC card carrying members.


He assured that the Dapo Abiodun led administration would has put machinery in motion to revive the sports sector of the state.  


According to him, the competition is sponsored by the State Chairman, Amalgamation of Commercial Motorcycles Owners, Riders and Repairs Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), Mr. Kayode Sowunmi.


He announced a cash prize of N200,000 for eventual champions, while the first runner up will coast home with N150,000 and N100,000 for third place winner.


In his remark, a former Commissioner for Youths and Sports in the state, Hon. Afolabi noted that, the competition is for discovering of talents.


The APC House of Representatives Candidate urged the organizers to consider age limit between 18-25 years to discover young talents that can build their careers from the competition.


"I want to assure that the competition will be yearly basis. I know it will turn to state event soon. The game is about discovering talents not about winning at all cost. We must look for young talented youths that can build career from it. I just want to urge the organizers to consider age limit for discovering talents. It is about mobilizing for our party, it can give us the opportunity to form a team. It might serve as a way of building feeders team for the state-owned football team, Gateway United FC."


The sponsor, Kayode Sowunmi commended the party for engaging the youths during the holiday.


Sowunmi alluded his love for the party and achievements of the Governor Dapo Abiodun in turning around the fortune of the state as reason behind the sponsorship of the competition.


He said ''I am much interested in any programmes that will contribute to the  emergency of His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun the governor of Ogun State in 2023.''


He called on the residents of the State to support the re-election of Prince Dapo Abiodun so that they can continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy.
