500, 000 Children To Benefit From Deworm Exercise In Ogun

ABEOKUTA - The Ogun State Government is set to deworm over 500, 000 enrolled and non- enrolled school age children between the ages of five and 14, in 11 Local Government Areas of the State.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, who disclosed this at the Agenda for Social Mobilization Meeting, organized by the Ministry in conjunction with Evidence Action in Abeokuta, said the programme would commence on Thursday, 14th of March, 2019.
Dr. Ipaye, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Nafiu Aigoro described worms as parasite that thrive on nutrition from the human intestine, adding that it often leads to anaemia, stomach ache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite and blood in stool, hence the need for quick intervention through the deworming exercise, to ensure that the children are healthy.
The Commissioner noted that the first phase of the exercise was targeted at 11 Local Government Areas with high rate of the parasite, saying that the second phase would commence before the end of the year.
While urging parents and guardians to take advantage of the exercise to deworm their children and wards, Dr. Ipaye said the drugs that would be administered to the children would be free.
The Programme Manager, Evidence Action, South West Zone, Femi Adepoju, said the Group would assist in the training of teachers and health workers, enjoining parents to embrace the exercise as it was aimed at ensuring a better life for the children.
