ABEOKUTA - Ogun state chapter of National Union of Road Transport Workers Union (NURTW) has urged the citizens to disregard rumour of possible outbreak of violence across the state's motor parks.
NURTW's unit chairman for Ita-Oshin, Alhaji Akeem Iyeru Bodunrin who spoke with journalists yesterday in Abeokuta, the state capital said no member of the transport union is contemplating such action that can undermine the existing peace across motor parks in the state.
Iyeru said all the transport unions in the state, particularly the NURTW along with market men and women are ready to give an unalloyed supports to the government of the day in a way that would sustaine the existing peace being enjoyed by all and sundry across the state.
News had filtered the major cities and towns across the state that NURTW members, led by Iyeru were planning to violently dislodge the Alhaji Akeem Adeosun (a.k.a. Jango) led state leadership of the union following the emergence Abiodun of All Progressives Congress (APC) as against Hon. Abdulkabir Abiodun Akinlade of the Allied People's Movement (APM).
But apparently reacting to the news, Iyeru said neither him, nor any member of his unit was preparing for a violent change of batons within the NURTW leadership in Ogun following the emergence of Prince Dapo Abiodun as the governor-elect.
While dismissing the report, Iyeru also explained that the NURTW has a proper laid-down means of changing leadership as "expressly stated" in the transport union's constitution.
"The point is that our state chairman, Alhaji Akeem Adeosun had threatened that himself and others would chase us out of the state by Monday March 11th for following Prince Dapo Abiodun of APC and not supporting Hon. Abiodun Akinlade of APM and I have since then, stopped going to attend any state function of the union".
"But myself and my people told him that we should be catious so as not to mix membership of the NURTW with politics. But he would not listen to my plea. Despite that, he had sent out one of my members from Kuto motor park and another one; Akamo from Ijaiye garage because of their supports for Dapo Abiodun of APC".
"But as a bonafide son of Ogun state and in accordance with the Biblical injunction, I am of the opinion that our state chairman, Alhaji Adeosun is afraid of the consequences of his earlier threat to us and that is why he sponsored that rumour that I was planning violent take-over of motor parks in the state".
"I however, want to assure the people of the state that neither myself, nor any of my supporters is planning such evil. We also acknowledge that Alhaji Akeem Adeosun is one of our leaders in the state and cannot be an ordinary floor member. It is the union through our constitution or the government influence that determines who leads the union at state level just as the outgoing governor Ibikunle Amosun did in his (Adeosun) case".
