ABEOKUTA - Association of Water Well Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP) has called on Ogun State government to make portable and safe drinking water available to the residents to reduce the risk of water borne diseases.
The body also added that, lack of portable water has also been identified as factors responsible for poor observance of sanitation at home and in work places, thereby exposing human beings to further health hazards.

The Chairman, Association of Water Well Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP), Ogun State chapter, Engr. Wole Adekoya, made this submission on Friday during a courtesy visit to the Ogun State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abeokuta as part of programmes marking the 2019 World Water Day, with the theme, “Water For All, Leaving No One Behind".
He said clean water was very important in every household, for food preparation and other chores, noting that AWDROP would always be opened to collaborate with Water Corporation to move the water sector forward.
Adekoya said the Association aims to inculcate Goal six of the United Nations Sustainable Goal, which seeks to provide “water for all by year 2030” on the people, so that they could work with this mind set.
According to him, “Water is important to every living being. It is fundamental human need. Each person on earth requires at least 20 to 50 litres of clean and safe water a day for drinking, cooking and simply keeping themselves clean. Human life is completely dependent on water. His very first daily activity starts with pouring water over his face and sleeps with drinking water after dinner.
"Without safe drinking water, adequate sanitation and hygiene facilities at home and in places of work and education is a mirage. Also, it is disproportionate harder for women and girls to lead safe, productive, healthy lives," Adekoya said.
Earlier, the Ogun NUJ chairman, Comrade Wole Shokunbi, called on major stakeholders in the water sector and members of the fourth estate of the realm to embark on adequate sensitization on the importance of drinkable water.
According to Shokunbi, "the union is willing to collaborate with water engineers in the state, in as much as we are working for the sustainability of water supply to the good people of Ogun State."
