Newborn Baby Holds Contraceptive Coil His Mother Used To Avoid Pregnancy

A newborn baby has been pictured in Vietnam clutching the contraceptive coil his mother used in a failed bid to stop her conceiving according to a report by The Daily Mail.

The boy’s 34-year-old mother, who has had two other children previously, is said to have inserted the intrauterine device (IUD) two years ago.

The IUD came out at the same time as the baby, but separately, it was only after being born that the infant grabbed the coil. Pictures taken by Obstetrician Tran Viet Phuong at Hai Phong International Hospital, Vietnam, show the newborn baby holding on to the device.

He also said that the IUD may have failed to prevent the pregnancy if it had moved from its original position. Two of the photos, which were posted to the hospital’s Facebook page, show the baby boy with his eyes shut while holding the IUD.

In another picture, the IUD can be seen lying next to the newborn. The baby was born healthy and weighed 7lbs and remains under observation with his mother.

In practice, after being inserted into a woman’s uterus, the IUD is meant to release either copper or hormones to prevent sperm from fertilising any eggs.

The Obstetrician speaking about this said:

After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture. I never thought it would receive so much attention.

An IUD is a tiny device that’s put into your uterus to prevent pregnancy. It’s long-term, reversible, and it is seen as one of the most effective birth control methods.
