ABEOKUTA - Some trigger-happy policemen attached to Adigboluja Police Station at Ojodu, Berger area of Ogun State have allegedly shot and killed a motorcycle rider and injured three others.
It was learnt that the motorcyclists were protesting against hike in ticket fee imposed on them by a newly created body called Riders and Owners of Motorcycle Organisation (ROMO) by the Ogun State government.
The motorcyclists were said to be paying N200 as ticket fee before the establishment of ROMO, but the ticket fee was increased to N500 yesterday, which the riders rejected, leading to the clash.
Oyeyemi said crisis brewed out among members of Okada union and the riders and the police went to the scene to restore normalcy.
He said while the police was addressing the angry mob, one of them overpowered a police officer and snatched his riffle.
He added that in other to disarm him, the police had to shot to the air to disperse the angry crowd.
He explained that, unfortunately one of the crowd was hit with a stray bullet and was rushed to the hospital but gave up the ghost at the hospital.
"the police did not shot any Okada riders. But some hoodlums who who attacked our station at Ojodu with gallon of petrol with a threat to burn down the station were resisted.
"When our patrol team got to the scene the hoodlums vandalized many properties all in the name of protest and five of them are subsequently arrested. They then mobilized themselves to the station destroying vehicles within the premises of the station .
"They even snatched a riffle from one of the patrol team and they need to demobilized him and when they got to the hospital he died.
"The policemen has no business in that protest,the crises is between Okada riders and Okada union. Police are just there to make peace. They then came to the station to destroyed and that is very common of them in that Ojodu-Abiodun area.
"Sometimes ago they looted the police station, they carry television, stabiliser, we later arrested those they sold all those things to. Do we have to wait until when they burn the police station down."
