ABEOKUTA - Government at all levels have been charged to ensure parents comply with education for all policy and put in place punitive measures for offenders so as to stop the trend.

This was contained in a press release signed by Mrs. Modupe Sobukonla, Chairperson, Ogun state chapter of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) to commemorate 2020 International Day Of The Girl Child.

The International Day of the Girl Child is Observed every 11th October as declared by the United Nations.

Sobukonla maintained that, parents as the first contacts of the children should ensure good nutrition for the girl child for proper development of brain and body.

She added that, they should  ensure the girl child is allowed access to Education, quality healthcare and other opportunities like their male counterparts.

"In line with this year's theme which is "My Voice, Our Equal Future" the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists wishes to remind all stakeholders of the need to join forces to address the various challenges facing the girl child.

"Government should ensure Parents comply with Education for all policy and put in place punitive measures for those who are preventing their girl child from going to School.

"The National Assembly should enact legislation against early and forceful marriage as well as punishment for offenders so as to stop the trend.

"Above all, government should go beyond paying mere lip service to the issue of rape and sexual abuses of the girl child by coming up with a legislation and stringent punitive measures without option of fine against abusers and this should be done as a matter of urgency."
