ABEOKUTA - No fewer than 501 residents of Alamala community in Abeokuta North local government area of Ogun state have benefited from the Nigerian Army free medical outreach and empowerment programme.
The Medical outreach and empowerment programme was part of activities to commemorate the quarterly Operation Crocodile Smile VI which commenced on 20th October, 2020 nationwide.
Addressing residents of the community on Wednesday, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major-General Godwin Umelo stated that the exercise was to strengthen the civil relationship between military and civilians in the country.
He said the exercise was all encompassing as it focuses on cyber warfare designed to identify, track and counter negative propaganda on social media and to attune men of the Nigerian Army to other security threats aimed at disrupting the peace and security of the country.
Maj. Gen. Umelo explained that, the exercise involves real time response to security challenges within formations of the Military towards the sustenance of peace and security.
He added that, the exercise was to further strengthen and boost the already existing relationship with the civilians.
He noted that, the medical outreach was a way of giving back to the host community across the country.
"In all, the Nigerian Army leverages on this yearly event to showcase its commitment as a professionally, responsive force in the discharge of its constitutional role as espoused in the Chief of Army Staff vision."
Speaking earlier, the Commander, 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, Emmanuel Amadasun noted that, the free medical outreach was facilitated due to lack of health facility in the community.
According to him, the Nigerian Army through the medical personnel conducted blood pressure test, sugar test, eye defect test as well as the distribution of free medicine and provision of eye-glasses.
"As part of series of activities to be conducted within this period, 35 Artillery Brigade under the auspices of the GOC is conducting a medical outreach and empowerment aimed at providing free medical services to the community as well as donation of items to empower women, widows, orphans and the less privileged as a way of promoting civil military relationship".
Thanking the Nigerian Army on behalf of the beneficiaries, the royal father of the community, the Onijale Papa, Oba Michael Babalola described the programme as impactful and a welcome development.
The monarch applauded the military for giving back to the community, saying it would improve the businesses and well-being of the people.
Thirty women, widows and orphans became beneficiaries of items such as freezers, grinding machines, hair dryers and sewing machines to aid their businesses.
