Insecurity: Ogun PCRC Tasks Special Constabulary Police Officers To Maintain Peace


ABEOKUTA - With the increasing rate of insecurity in Nigeria, members of the community policing in Ogun State have been advised to make sure their society is free of crime amidst the insecurity in the state.


The Vice Chairman, PCRC in South West Zone 2, Alh Ibrahim Olaniyan, made this known at the National Capacity Building Training Workshop for Zone 2 community police which involves Ogun State and Lagos, held at the Cultural Centre in Abeokuta recently.


The over 600 special constabulary at the training last Thursday was made to know that, they are the right hand of the police in their community, and as an intelligent body they should make sure they maintain peace in their society.  


The training tagged Effectiveness of Community Policing in Relation with PCRC highlights the duties of the community police, their power and how effective they have been in the time past.


Alh. Ibrahim says community police which involves indigenes of the community with different professions, are to report and reveal secrets pertaining to crime in their society because police cannot be everywhere at the same time.   


He charged them to possess the attributes of solving minor issues in their environment and continues to assist in the control of traffic.


The Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun speaking at the training, highlights the usefulness of community policing to the police force as they serve as the intermediary between the police and the people by providing useful information on the state of security in their environment.


Ajogun said the PCRC which include traditional leaders, philanthropist and able citizens have been good to the police force logistically and through financial support.


He advised all participants to see security as a collective responsibility and not for the security agency alone 


Also, the spokesman of the special constabulary, Comrade Sodipo said about 300 hundred community police who are not always on uniform are currently working in their local environment as special intelligent.


Present at the training are; Governor Dapo Abiodun represented by Commissioner for Community Development Hon. Gani Hamzat, commissioner of police in Ogun State Edward Ajogun, PCRC stake holders, community policing officers, and other stake holders in Ogun State.
