ABEOKUTA - In less than 24 hours, the Acting Rector of cash-trapped D.S Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, Ogun state allegedly spent N4.4million within 24hours to battle termites said to have invaded the institution.
Part of the money was also said to be spent on grading of the polytechnic's roads, air-conditioner servicing, repair of the polytechnic's big generator, and servicing existing pumps.
This is coming at a time the staffers are groaning over non-payment of salary and poor welfare incentives, which triggered the "work to rule" strike action by the Polytechnic's chapter of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) embarked upon today.
They wondered how a small institution would spent N1.3million to battle the 'invisible' termites when one-tenth of the amount could fumigate the entire school conveniently.
The staff anger was heightened as there was no sign of fumigation exercise, even though when there were no signs of ant-hills anywhere in the school.

An inside source in the Rector's office noted that, there was no single building fumigated since assumption of office of the Acting Rector in May 2020.
In a document obtained by THE ENCOUNTER NEWS, the sum of One million, Two Hundred and fifty thousand (N1,250,000) naira was expended on the grading of the Polytechnic Road on two occasions same day, while the sum N440,000 and N456,000 was spent on servicing of air-conditioning and repair of generator set respectively.

The source further claimed, at no point since the assumption of office by the Ag. Rector in May 2020 did the roads leading to the Polytechnic was graded or within the school premises.
They, however, urged the state government to set up a fact-finding committee to investigate the exigencies of the Acting Rector, saying if left unchecked, the once glorified institution will be completely run to the ground.
