Abductors Demand N300m To Free Buhari’s Prayer Consultant

KATSINA - Kidnappers have reportedly demanded N300 million to free Sheikh Ahmad Sulaiman, a popular Quranic reciter who regularly offered supplications for President Muhammadu Buhari at campaign rallies.

The eminent religious scholar was kidnapped by gunmen in Katsina State while returning from a religious function in Kebbi on his way to Kano last Thursday.

He was abducted alongside four other religious preachers, on Sheme- Kankara Road in Katsina State.

A family member, who identified himself simply as Mallam Kabir, told journalists in Kano that they had been emotionally distressed since the news of the abduction broke last week.

Kabir wondered why the kidnappers would abduct a religious teacher who was not a politician or wealthy personality. The family member described the incident as “very disturbing and worrisome.”

He said: “Everybody in the family and sympathisers are apprehensive. Though we are glad he is in good condition now, we are afraid of what the kidnappers may do to him if they don’t get any positive response from us.

“Notwithstanding, we pray he remains unharmed as we ask Allah to soften the hearts of his abductors so that they will set him free as soon as possible.”

One of the students of the abducted Sheikh, Mohammed Abdul, said they were very worried about the incident.

He said: “Sheikh Sulaiman is a soft-spoken, kind, generous and humble religious leader who like to assist the needy.

He always preaches about religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence as he totally condemns extremism.”
