ABEOKUTA - In order to reduce the challenges posed by the ravaging global pandemic, COVID-19 on the people, the Chief of Staff to the Ogun state governor, Alhaji Salisu Shuaib on Tuesday began cash disbursement to 115 polling units in Odeda local government area of the state.
Salisu said the effort was part of efforts to support the state government activities to cushion the effect of the lockdown order of the federal government on the people.
Most of the recipients are elderly, vulnerable members of the society, selected political leaders, women, non-indigenes, religious leaders and physically challenged within the local government.
According to a top party leader in the local government, the palliative was given to community and political leaders for onward disbursement to vulnerable people within the local government on behalf of Chief of Staff.
One of the beneficiaries in Osiele described Alhaji Salisu as “God-sent" to the council area for responding selflessly to the plight of his people.
She said, ''dividends of democracy was extended to the aged who are often neglected in the society. The disbursement is targeted at less priveleged, selected leaders within Odeda LG, starting from ward one using the ward to ward and unit to unit approach to ensure the social distancing order is obeyed.
"The committee who were saddled with the responsibility of disbursing the cash to the appropriate quarters ensured the gesture get to the people especially the elderly and vulnerables of the community."
Also speaking, a former Secretary to Odeda Local Government, Hon. Majekodunmi Olanrewaju Haruna, thanked Alhaji Salisu for the kind gesture, saying it was timely and impactful.
He therefore urged people of Odeda Local government and the state in general to observe “regular hand washing with soap and water and use of sanitizers have proved very helpful in preventing the virus.
In his reaction, the Chief of Staff, Alhaji Salisu Shuaib thanked the people of Odeda Local government for adhering with the government order to sit at home with a promise that government will continue to do everything in ameliorating effect of this COVID-19 pandemic on the people.
He appealed to residents of the state to adhere strictly to all regulations prescribed by health professionals and other regulatory agencies.
