ABEOKUTA - Lecturers of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital may embark industrial action over unpaid five months salaries by the State government.
The lecturers under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) MAPOLY chapter said the state government and management of the institution have remained defiant to their welfare despite many correspondences to the management.
ASUP in a communiqué issued at the end of its emergency Congress on Monday said the nonchalant attitude of the management to the issues of outstanding promotions of its members running from 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 has brought untold hardship on its members.
The communiqué jointly signed by the ASUP Chairman, Babatunde Osifalujo and General Secretary, Tomisi Adegunle emphasized that, the vacuum created by the absence of Governing Council for a long period and non-appointment of a substantive Rector for the Polytechnic had further denied their members of deserving career growth for the period of four years.
They however, vowed to resume to work-to-rule strike action effective from January 2, 2021 if their demands are not met within seven days.
"The indifference of the management to our members' well-being. This is exemplified in the disdain with which the Union's correspondences are treated. The union's correspondences are not even acknowledged not to talk of addressing the issues therein.
"The non-payment of our members' salaries and allowances for five months running. The non-payment of honoraria for part-time classes/lecture deliveries for five (5) months.
"After exhaustive deliberations on the foregoing issues, the Congress finally resolved that;
"Management should immediately come out with a roadmap for 2021 detailing the Polytechnic's expected income and expenditure and sources of financing its deficits. This is necessary as we cannot afford going blindly into another year of agony and uncertainty.
"Ogun state government must commence immediately, the process of putting in place a functional Governing Council for our institution. Government should immediately appoint a substantive Rector for the Polytechnic.
"Our members should be paid at least three months of the outstanding salaries and allowances on or before Wednesday, 23rd December, 2020.
"The long overdue 2017 promotion and appointments must be completed with the staff concerned receiving their letters not later than 31st December, 2020 and failure to accede to the foregoing as demanded, the union shall resume its work-to-rule effective from January 2, 2021."
Just imagine the indifferent and unconcerned attitude of the Ogun State government and the Management of MAPOLY in connection with staffers and Lecturers unpaid five months salaries.
