LAGOS - The family of a robbery victim at the ATM gallery of Guaranty Trust Bank, Onipanu Branch Office on 190, Latunde Labinjo Avenue, Onipanu, Lagos have demanded a full investigation into the attack by the Lagos State Police Command.
According to the family, the victim, Mr. Ayodele Adebunmi had visited the GTB ATM gallery at about 10.pm on Thursday, 24th of December to withdraw cash alongside an Uber Driver identified as Taofeek Oyedokun, whose service he had engaged earlier.
The victim was said to have resorted to paying the Uber Driver cash, after efforts to make a cash transfer via his bank app proved abortive.
In what appears to be a twist, some hoodlums stormed the ATM stand, attacked and dispossessed Adebunmi and Oyedokun, of cash, their mobile phones; an iPhone and Samsung device, as well as other valuables.
While Adebunmi was stripped of the N20,000 cash he had with him, the shirt he was wearing on the night was also forcefully taken from him, the family said.
The men of the underworld also said to have inflicted deep machete cuts on Adebunmi, shot him on the leg, leaving him "half dead."
But the Uber Taxi Driver who equally lost his N18,000 cash and power bank to the attackers managed to scamper for safety, after being beaten by the assailants.
Narrating the ordeal, the Uber driver said he returned to the scene few minutes after the robbers, numbering three left, only to find Adebunmi in the pool of his own blood.
Oyedokun said he rushed the victim to several hospitals, but he was rejected on the condition of the severity of the injuries and gun shot.
Adebunmi was eventually admitted and given treatment at the Military Hospital, Yaba, Lagos.
According to Mr. Opeolu Adebunmi, an Uncle to the victim, Oyedokun who revisited the crime scene on Saturday, 26th of December had found out the GTB Security guards were on duty on the fateful day and witnessed firsthand the incident from their office upstairs.
The victim's uncle also confirmed that there were expended shells of the bullets fired on the fateful day, but had been picked up by security officials attached to the bank the next day.
In his letter dated 29th of December and addressed to the Lagos state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adebunmi suspected foul play in the attack, and demanded a full investigation into the incident.
He said "Information at my disposal revealed that as at Saturday, 26 December, 2020 when the Uber Taxi Driver visited the crime scene again, there was a confirmation that the Bank’s Security guards were on duty on the sad day, and witnessed the whole scene as it unfolded from the Upstairs office, where they were holed in.
"There were also indications that expended shells of the bullets fired while the violent robbery took place were picked up in the early hours of the day after the sad event by some Security officials of the Bank.
"May I therefore appeal that you kindly cause an investigation to be conducted into the incident, and also assist by using your good offices to compel an urgent review of the CCTV footage of the recorded incident in order to unmask the perpetrators of this dastardly act and bring them to justice."
As at the time of this report, the Lagos State Police command are yet to respond to the family's plea concerning the incident.
