ABEOKUTA - The League of Registered Political Parties in Ogun state has commended Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state for suspending the lockdown order in the state by the federal government.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Sunday in a live broadcast ordered for immediate lockdown and restriction of movement in Abuja, Lagos and Ogun states as parts of effort to curtail the spread of the coronavirus disease.

But Governor Abiodun on Monday said he had pleaded with the President to shift the lockdown order in Ogun state till Friday to allow the state government provide palliatives for the people.

The League of registered political parties however described the governor's action as people-oriented, saying the shift would allow the residents to prepare better.

The League in a statement by its Chairman, Oginni Sunday Olaposi urged residents of the state to use the five days window to stockpile foodstuff at home and adhere strictly to safety measures by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

"The President goofed in his live broadcast, he ought to have discuss with the affected state governors before he announced total locked down. It shows the laxity of the capacity of federal government, because before you can announce the total lockdown of a state, you supposed to have firstly have a kind of robust conversation and understanding with the Chief Executive security officer of that state.

"But despite that laxity from the federal government, Governor Dapo Abiodun did not allow it to go that way. He took the Bull by the horn for allowing the people to prepare. That is a show of class of a pragmatic leader of Dapo Abiodun.

"Despite efforts to curtail the spread of COVID-19, he must ensure it has human face. You don't solve a problem by creating another. If the Governor did not took that step, it may have created another problem for the people of the state, because people are unprepared.

"So, for the governor to give a five days window to prepare, we need to give Mr. Governor kudos for being a charismatic Governor. He has done so well and we need to commemd him," Oginni said.
